A few things about font selection and site styles

________

Logo Fonts:

  • Be aware that fonts have personalities! Some fonts are adaptable, which means you can safely use them for any topic. The way you can tell that a font is adaptable is by asking yourself "does this font remind me of anything?" A place, a period in history, a geography, a particular culture, an emotion? If your answer is "no, it doesn't remind me of anything. I just read it" then this will be an adaptable font. If your answer is "yes - this reminds me of, for example, a chinese restaurant or a soccer game or Game of Thrones" then this will be strong font that you would be wise to stay away from.
  • Bottomline: Stay way from "fancy" looking stuff!
  • Do not try to be "different"! That rarely works when you choose fonts. The difference will happen when you put them together with other things.
  • Stay away from "cute" stuff. Childish looking fonts such as comic sans. They only work in specific contexts.
  • Sans serif fonts are better for contemporary subjects. Serif fonts are better for classic, "serious" things.
  • Choose a font that has a big family. In other words a font that has a lot of styles (or weights) ranging from black to thin.
  • Do not use "effects" on fonts. Such as 3D, or bevels, or strokes. Leave them as they are.
  • With exceptions type is used either black, white or grey. The exceptions are when you want to put a special emphasis on some pieces of text through a color.

Text fonts:

The thing you need to pay the closest attention to when choosing the fonts for your website is legibility, in other words readability. Can people read the information that you wish to convey with text very easily? That is the first and foremost concern. The two videos below show you tips as to how you can achieve good readability by selecting the correct type of paragraph font and how finding font families with lots of weights will come in very useful when you are setting up typographic hierarchies.

And then finally, there is a video in which we look at setting up custom font styles inside Wix - a trick that you will find very useful once you start putting your site content together.

When it comes to fonts that we will use for all the other texts (headlines, subheads and paragraphs) on the website here are the important things to be aware of:
